A.R.Rahman and Background Score

A.R.Rahman has come a long away from just using the songs from his music library as background music in films like “Roja” and “Bombay”. “Roja” also had some brilliant background music in chasing scenes. The Yannishque piano love theme is one of my favorites among his background scores. And who can forget the Bombay theme. But I feel “Lagaan” had the best of A.R.Rahman when it comes to background score. Though the soundtrack of “Warriors of Heaven and Earth” was great, I haven’t seen the film yet, so I can’t comment on it. Also “Rang De Basanti” had one of the most innovative scores in recent times. Anyway I just wanted to post the links to the samples from background score of the movie “Provoked”. Theme2 seems to be the main theme of the movie. Very good one and it is heavily rooted in Indian Classical music. Can’t say how great the music is until we hear it along with the visuals.

Themes 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 .

You know, you seem to think the opposite of all other people. Every other non-rahmaniac thinks that ARR's lost his magic touch and that he's repititive. I'm glad you think the opp.

Sushma: First of all, i am not a non-rahmaniac. I am as crazy as any rahmaniac on rahman's music.

Varun: Yeah, how can i forget the beautiful title theme. Yes, ofcourse it is a good one but yet i feel lagaan is THE best of rahman.

prasanna: no second thought about it. IR is the numero uno in BGM.

i dunno but i dun see the point on giving the credit on IR the best BGM maker, for me is ARR the best, not only he gives new tunes for the scene, that bit itself will have a magic by its own!for instance,Alaipayuthey, all the bgms were so good to listen with the movie, and the best part,some1 released it voiceless, ripping it from DVD,there is MORE hidden magics in the BGMS...who would put so much effort on BGM??esp when he knows its gonna get drowned by dialouges?? :D...for me....its ARR the best....

Background Score is not about having good music, it is about apt music. In that sense, IR is a class apart. Can you think of making audience get the emotion in the visual with a single note on Veena, IR can do it and far more? I didn't say, ARR is bad, he is good but definitely not as great as IR. One more movie in which i liked ARR's background score is "Iruvar".

Firstly, I'm a BIG fan of Ilaiyaraja BUT I appreciate others too. When it comes to comparing IR and ARR, I wud just say ARR is like Sachin(surely a genius) and IR is like Bradman( best ever).Re-recording (bgms) got a new meaning after IR. Even today, he is the benchmark.
