Vaaranam Aayiram

Harris Jeyaraj indeed reserves his best for Gautam Menon. Harris + Gautam Menon + Thamarai have another big winner in “Vaaranam Aayiram”.

Varanam Aayiram rocks. Nejukkul Peidhidum Maamazhai is going to be in everyone's lips soon.

Harris has done fantastic old style song in Sudha Raghunathan's voice (anal mele pani thuli) and Shruti Kamal has made a very impressive debut with Adiye Kolluthey.

I wondered about Karthik's song. Seems Gautham's plan to lure the frontbenchers:)

Krishna - I don't know why should Gautam go for a Gaana to lure the frontbenchers... because from what i see, Harris's melodies appeals to people to everyone including frontbenchers... But we can't comment until we see the movie, it may also be because of the demans of the script

Sam - Yes. 'Nenjukkul' and 'Mundhinam' are my picks too. Hariharan is so soothing in that song. Prashanthini (malayasia vasudevan's daughter) has been singing for a while but i hope she gets the much needed break with 'Mundhinam'.. though she struggles a little at higher octaves.. i like her voice.. and Naresh Iyer is as always good....

For a change, monotony of Harris + Bombay Jayshree is broken by Sudha Raghunathan's entry... a clever choice of singer

Sruthi at some places sounds like P.Susheela... anyone feel the same...

Thanks Suresh! Good to hear :)

Can't wait to hear it!

Yet to hear the songs, and it's good to see all positive reviews.

My two cents,... not on the music of Varanam Aayiram, but on the generally (intentional/unintentional) condescending comments on the 'gaana'. Is it not a separate genre by itself, a form of music...that originates from the poverty stricken urban settlements, the slums. If there can be classical, jazz, blues and what not.. there's gaana too.

And the irony becomes all the more pronounced when some people embrace rap and hip-hop with all their heart when they sneer at ...'gaana'. In actuality, gaana is almost a counterpart of what rap or hip-hop is, those again originated from the poverty stricken settlements. I have never understood such ppl's logic.

Not to hurt anybody this... but it was lil nagging to see such comments and wanted to tell my opinion.

Please don't take this as offensive in any way.

Muthuvel - I think the problem is with the way i have put it. I am not someone who feels 'Gaana' is something of lesser form of music.

'Gaana' is something that catches the attention of the frontbenchers instantly. But I feel Harris's all type of songs catch the attention of frontbenchers (i have seen lay people working on building construction having 'June ponal' as caller tune in their mobile) and all kinds of audiences for that matter.

And so I said Gautam doesn't need a Gaana to lure frontbenchers, when he has Harris's music even the most westernised tunes of his reach the masses because of the minimalistic orchestration, good lyrics and crystal clear pronounciation of the words by the singers....

I agree with Muthuvel. Ghana is so much vibrant and so much captivating. Actually, if you have had an hectic day and feel tired, there is nothing better to pep you up than a good Ghana.

I have enjoyed every Ghana song from Isai Thendral Deva and his brothers. Mishkin seems to have found a way to get one great gana in each of his movie. But he is just two movies old so we have to wait and see if he keeps the trend. I was interested if we can list best 2 best Ghana songs of each year from say 1960s. There are several that can qualify as Ghana, such as "Pampara Kannaley".

Suresh, I don't think that Ghana is for front benchers only. If that is so I am proud to sit in the front bench!

:-)

Suresh,

On Shruti's voice, I tend to feel that her singing style is more like Usha Utup, Malgudi Subha, Anupama (Konjam Nilavu - Thiruda Thiruda). Do you agree?

Suresh,

Is Audio CD better than high sample MP3? I read on the net that MP3 gives the same sound quality by only removing the sounds in the frequency which the normal human ear doesn't hear.

Do you have a different view?

Three comments in a day! (if it is not too much, it will definitely be three much).

Sam - Yes. I didn't mean that 'Gaana' is only for front benchers. But it is definitely a form of music which easily appeals to front benchers.

I agree with you on Sruthi Haasan's style of singing but tone or texture or whatever they call of her voice sounds close to P.Susheela especially when she sings 'Vaadai kaatrinil ORUNAAL, Oru vaasam vandhadhu, un nesam endradhu'...

from my experience I guess only 320 kbps audio samples are of CD quality..

Thanks for the reply. As such the comment was a general observation as i have seen many people talk very low of 'gaana'. Being a regular reader i kinda know u indulge in all kinds of music with equal passion.

Actually it was bit interesting because i have always felt that Gautam Menon is a type of dir (given his posh-urban upbringing and background) may not approve of Gaana as a music genre itself. So a gaana type song in his movie... am very curious to go buy the soundtrack now.

On a jovial note. The way most Tamil films are taken (especially the heroism oriented ones) it doesn't matter where you sit! Front or back it is same shit!

Karthik said...

Guys,

I think Oh shanti shanti...rocks big time....next on my list is for Ava enna enna thedi vandha anjala...a different number for karthik...

P.S. Suresh Kumar said...

Yes Om Shanthi Shanthi is very peppy. It is good to listen SPB Charan after a gap... He deserves more songs in Tamil Film Music...I don't know why composers don't use his voice much.... His voice and style of singing can be clearly distinguished from his father's voice ...
